Jaspert, Nikolas

BIOGRAPHY

Nikolas Jaspert studied Medieval History, Hispanic Philology and Art History at the Free University of Berlin (Germany). He concluded a thesis on the mediaeval history of Barcelona in 1995 (published in 1996 by Duncker und Humblot, Berlin); the same year he joined the history department of Berlin’s Free Univerity as an assistant professor. From 1998 to 2005 he was Lecturer at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. From 2005 to 2013 he was Full Professor for Medieval History at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Since Octobre 2013 he is Full Professor for Medieval History at the University of Heidelberg. He is coeditor of the journal “Zeitschrift für Historische Forschung” (ZHF) and member of several advisory boards (“Anuario de Estudios medievales”, “Imago Temporis”, “Aragón en la edad media”, “Medievalismo”). In 2008 he was elected Membre correspondent de la secció històricoarqueològica del Institut d’Estudis Catalans, in 2009 he was admitted to the “Konstanzer Arbeitskreis für Mittelalterliche Geschichte”. From 2009 to 2013 he was the founding director of the Zentrum für Mittelmeeerstudien (Centre for Mediterranean Studies) at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, and in 2013 he was elected president of the Société Internationale des Historiens de la Méditerranée. His academic work is centred on Mediterranean History, the history of the Iberian Peninsular, the crusades, medieval religious orders and urban history.
